Baby Dumping, who's care?

Surely, all of us have heard about fruit season besides the the four major weather seasons, but do you ever heard of baby dumping season? 1st January of New Year celebration and 14th February of Valentine’s Day are known as mating season nowadays which leads to unwanted pregnancies among youth and obviously, leads to baby dumping cases which can be easily read in the mass media.

Based on Bukit Aman Police Headquarters statistics, it was found a total of 580 babies were found dumped between years 2003-2006. This number of cases increase every year where as much as 65 baby dumping cases has increased to 83 cases in the year 2009. In the first five months, almost every day there are reports on dumped baby cases. While year 2012 also known as Year of Baby Dumping cases and this has brought a lots of question and issues. Based on these statistics, its found that 93.5% of the cases are caused by teenagers that are below 33 years old.

But why this incident are becoming a 'disastrous trend' among Malaysians, especially the teenagers ? We could categorize the factor causing into a several reasons. But first, let us look deeply into the statistic of baby dumping by states in Malaysia (Royal Portal of Police, Malaysia, August 2012)

Based on the statistic (pie chart) above, Selangor has been the most worst state for baby dumping case record followed by Johor and Sarawak. While looking into this level of occurrence, we could analyze that developed states such as Selangor and Sarawak tends to have higher percentage of cases. This is because developed states could have more heavy-social places or nightlife spots that could contribute into sexual activities in which could end up with baby dumping. Those places include pubs, night bars, motel and hotel room that serve with low and payable prices by teenagers.

Furthermore, there are several major causes for this kind of cases. With these major causes, how do we find solutions and curb with this issue? We will discuss it as follows :

1. Lack of religious education causes poor application of religious knowledge

Nowadays, the problem of imparting religious education to our children is exercising the minds of many parents and guardians. While for us, we take religion, the taught of Islam pillars very seriously in daily life. Islam is a code of life, a living force manifest in every aspect of human life. In Islam, we've been taught about the dos and don'ts very clearly through Al-Quran and Hadith. While Islam underline clearly about the forbidden of Zina. Zina, in Arabic, means immorality, specifically conducting extramarital sex or premarital sex, or for an easy understanding; sexual intercourse or whichever actions that could cause sexual intercourse illegally. All religions are agreed that Zina is Haram(forbidden); no religion allows it. The punishment for Zina is the most severe of punishments, because it violates people’s honor and lineages. Thus, a well educated Muslim knows that the act is forbidden in Islam, while the purpose of life is not chasing pleasures, it is accomplishing Islam's missions.

2. Lack of parental care supervision

Youth tends to spend time among them, among their friends and peers much more rather than with family or parents. While, most parents are always busy with their work and carrier. Thus, when teenagers need attention, they seek their friends and peers rather than addressing the problem to the right person. As they mingle around, socialize and spend their most of the time among them. When a teenager conduct premarital sexual intercourse, they'll find the best way or solution to hide the dark side. Thus, parents should not ignore their children in this stage. They could be ignoring all the time, plus when it comes to problem, they should face it. They should stand with their childern to not go for baby dumping or even taught them about abortion. Parents should tie up the loose end with good advice, bring them for check up and always guide them on the right path.

3. Peer Influence

In addition, peer influence also leads to cases of baby dumping occurred. This is because at a young age, teens are very easily influenced by their peers. This problem becomes worse when they associate with negative peers. Negative friends will invite young people to do things outside the boundaries of religion and norms of society, such as going to places of entertainment such as disco, taking drugs and doing free association. Many teens who fall into promiscuity, and eventually reach a dead end to find her self with unwanted pregnancy. In desperation, they have to discard their babies. Thus, teenagers should always find good friends and always bear in mind with whom they're mixing around.

“A good friend and a bad friend are like a perfume-seller and a blacksmith: The perfume-seller might give you some perfume as a gift, or you might buy some from him, or at least you might smell its fragrance. As for the blacksmith, he might singe your clothes, and at the very least you will breathe in the fumes of the furnace.”

4. Media influence  and Pornography websites.

As we know, media such as Majalah Mangga, URTV always publishes many articles and news about social life. Sometimes television also highlights social life. Such matters encourage teenagers to follow the example expose. This will be the main reason why a social celebration could be celebrated in a such manner that could end up with many misbehaves. The occasions were celebrated in a very extreme manner and indirectly encourage to free sex which resulted in baby dumping cases. Those extreme celebration is originated from the west which 'did not suite at all' with our culture in Malaysia. Furthermore, films and free pornography websites should also be closed down by the government to control the sexual influence among teenagers. This is the crucial part, as most teenagers watch and follows the actions promoted in those websites.

As a conclusion, baby dumping cases will not end without any solution or intervention from all as we do not want any more babies to die. It is true that baby dumping case is the prevention of baby dumping lies in the shoulder of the parents, school and society to tackle it, however, it stills boil down to individual responsibility. The youths need to take full control and take a maximum care towards their self.

Everyone has the chance to change their self. As quoted by Zig Ziglar;

" If you don't like who you are and where you are, don't worry about it because you're not stuck either with who you are or where you are. You can grow. You can change .You can be more than you are "

Responsibility of preventing baby dumping cases lies on the shoulder of everyone ! They born just like us, they deserve a better life just like us as well. So together everyone make changes and together everyone achiever more !
